Arizona is one of those places people choose for the scenery alone.
Red rocks. Saguaros. Desert sunsets. Luxury resorts. Lakeside celebrations. The Grand Canyon. There is no shortage of reasons couples travel here to celebrate their wedding day.
But if you're not from Arizona, there is one thing you may not realize until you start planning:

From roughly mid-June through the end of September, Arizona's summer monsoon can bring increased humidity, thunderstorms, strong winds, blowing dust and sudden changes in weather conditions.
So yes, Arizona can absolutely give you the dreamy desert wedding you've been envisioning.
It can also decide to add a little plot development.
So What Does All of This Have to Do With Your Hair and Makeup?
Everything.
Your wedding-day beauty isn't happening in a vacuum.
Your skin, your hair and your finished makeup all have to exist within the conditions of your actual wedding day.

Let's Talk About Real Life for a Second
Consider someone with extremely long, very full hair that naturally refuses to hold a curl.
She wants big, soft, romantic volume for her wedding day.
Beautiful? Absolutely.
Simple? Not necessarily.
Now add an unusually warm Arizona day, a hairstyle that depends on volume and curl retention, and a bride who naturally runs her fingers through her hair when she's nervous.
Suddenly, we're not just recreating a Pinterest photo.
We're considering the density, weight, heat, movement and very human fact that this woman is going to actually live in her hairstyle.
She's going to hug people.

And that's important.

And Your Hair Isn't the Only Thing That Has to Survive Arizona

Arizona's dry climate can be especially noticeable for people who aren't accustomed to it. This is one of the biggest misconceptions I would love to clear up.
Your wedding makeup doesn't need to be completely unaffected by Arizona.
Honestly, I'm not sure that's a realistic expectation for any human being.
The goal is longevity, not magic.
Professional long-wear makeup can be strategically applied to help withstand heat, sweat, movement and a long wedding day.
But if you're standing outside in 110° heat taking portraits, your skin is still going to be warm.
You may sweat.
Your skin may produce oil.
Your lipstick may need attention.
Your hair may move.
And that's okay.
A successful wedding beauty plan anticipates those things rather than pretending they won't happen.
So How Do You Prepare?
The good news is that you don't have to figure all of this out yourself.
A thoughtful beauty plan takes the environment into consideration from the beginning.
Know Your Environment
Tell your beauty team what your wedding day actually looks like.
Are you getting married outdoors?
Will you be taking portraits in direct sun?
How much time will you spend outside?
Are you traveling between locations?
Are you getting married during the hotter months?
Could monsoon weather be a factor?
Those details matter.
Know Your Hair & Skin
Your natural characteristics matter more than a Pinterest photo.
Your artist should understand your hair's texture, density, length and styling history, along with your skin's needs, so they can create a look that works with you rather than against you.
Build for Longevity
Your beauty team should be thinking beyond the moment you leave the chair.
How long does your look need to last?
What conditions will it encounter?
Will you need touch-ups?
What products or tools should stay with you throughout the day?
These are all part of the beauty plan.
Have Realistic Expectations
Long-wear doesn't mean bulletproof.
You're allowed to sweat.
You're allowed to cry.
You're allowed to hug everyone you love.
You're allowed to touch your hair.
You're allowed to have a wedding day instead of spending eight hours worrying about whether your makeup still looks exactly like it did at 9 AM.
That's not a beauty failure. That's a wedding.
